Frequently Asked Questions

The answers below provide a general guide. Your employer and scheme provider may apply their own terms and procedures.

What is Cycle to Work?

Cycle to Work is a government-supported employee benefit which allows an employer to provide a bike and eligible cycling equipment through a salary sacrifice arrangement. The employee repays the agreed amount through deductions from gross salary.

What is salary sacrifice?

Salary sacrifice means agreeing to give up part of your gross salary in return for a non-cash benefit. In this case, the benefit is the hire of a bike and eligible cycling equipment from your employer.

How much could I save?

The amount saved depends on your earnings, tax position, National Insurance contributions, the scheme terms and any end-of-hire arrangements. Some higher-rate taxpayers may save up to approximately 42%, although individual savings will vary.

Is there a maximum amount I can spend?

There is no universal £1,000 scheme limit. However, your employer or scheme provider may impose its own maximum certificate value, so you should check before selecting your bike.

Can I get an electric bike?

Yes. Eligible electric bikes can be purchased through Cycle to Work schemes, subject to your employer's spending limit and the terms of your chosen provider.

What if I already own a bike?

Depending on your scheme provider's rules, you may be able to use a certificate for eligible equipment needed to improve the safety, security or practicality of cycling to work.

Do I have to use the bike only for commuting?

No. You can also use the bike for leisure riding. The scheme is intended primarily to support journeys between home and work, or parts of those journeys.

Do I own the bike immediately?

No. The bike and equipment are normally owned by your employer or scheme provider during the initial hire period. Your agreement will explain the available options at the end of that period.

What happens at the end of the hire period?

End-of-hire arrangements vary between employers and scheme providers. Options may include:

  • Continuing to hire the bike for an extended period.
  • Taking ownership under the provider's transfer arrangement.
  • Purchasing the bike at an agreed fair market value.
  • Returning the bike and equipment.

Check the terms of your specific scheme before applying.

Can I use my certificate to buy a sale bike?

Scheme purchases may be subject to Cycle World and provider-specific pricing conditions. Some sale prices or promotions may not be available when paying through a third-party Cycle to Work provider. WorkCycle purchases may be treated differently, so please contact us for confirmation before applying.
